CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

With only the aid of house lighting shining in the driveway, Ray loaded up GG-2 into the back of the Subaru. He had removed the battery from GG-1 since he couldn’t wait for the order to come from Sanyen. Tessa brought her bag out with a red cooler full of some fruit, snacks, soft drinks, and PBJ sandwiches.

“Looks like we’re going camping, just without the tent,” she said.

“You could say that. Should we pick one up on the way, just to make it official?”

“You know, maybe next time. I like hotel showers, blow dryer, make-up and a nice bed to sleep on, in case I have to dangle out of a helicopter again.”

“I was just kidding,” Ray chuckled.

Tessa smiling back at Ray, struggling to get the cooler in the back seat.

By five a.m., they were in the car, ready to roll. The neighborhood was quiet, with just a few folks driving by headed to work. Without the radio on, with sleepy expressions, they made their way toward the 101 for the first leg of the journey.

“This will take all day, so I figure we will stay overnight somewhere close to Mojave,” Ray said.

“Fine by me. As long as we hit a few rest stops on the way. I’m going to take a nap for now. Wake me when you want breakfast.”

“I can do that.”

An early glow of sunlight turned the Holland house a light orange against the blue sky. It was 7:00 a.m., Fitz and Sommers pulled up front in their black Ford.

“You know, we should have been here earlier,” Sommers said.

“You were the one that didn’t think they were going anywhere today,” Fitz said, looking over at Sommers.

“It sure looks quiet in there,” Sommers said. “Maybe we should pay them an early visit, just to see if they’re here.”

“I agree.”

They both slid out and closed the car doors gently, breathing in the crisp air. Straightened their suit jackets, they proceeded toward the front door. Stepping up on the front porch, their shadows shone on the white door. Sommers knocked while Fitz pushed the doorbell, echoing a chime throughout the house.

“Was that really necessary?” Sommers asked.

“Sure, what if they’re still asleep? We need to know if they‘re here or not.”

Sommers shook his head, rolling his eyes.

“Let’s check the back,” Sommers said.

Fitz followed Sommers around to the kitchen door by the garage. They peered in through the window.

“Looks quiet,” Sommers said. “Let’s go back to the car.”

Walking back to the car, they slid back inside.

“Now what?” Fitz asked.

“We wait.”

“Wait for what? Shouldn’t we go find them?”

“No point. They’ll be back. They probably just went out to breakfast. Call it in that they aren’t here, and we’re staying.”

“Bentz will not like the fact that they aren’t here,” Fitz said.

“If Bentz wanted twenty-four-hour surveillance, he would have ordered it. He didn’t. We’re on this detail, and if they go to breakfast early and we miss them, no big deal. Just call it in.”

“Okay.”

Fitz called in and stated their position, and that the Holland’s were not home.
